 Areas of interest, teaching and research

I have carried out research and I have taught in different areas in psychology. Below there is a description of research projects, collaborations and modules taught, by area.

1. Cognitive Psychology

Research

Since 1998 I have been conducting research with expert chess players in problem solving, memory and imagery tasks. I used different research techniques (fMRI, eye-tracker, questionnaires and traditional experiments). This research was conducted with Fernand Gobet (Brunel University, UK), who was my PhD supervisor at The University of Nottingham (UK).

Currently I am engaged in a number of research collaborations:

    Michael Connors (Macquarie University, Australia), Bruce Burns (University of Sydney,

        Australia) and I are writing a paper about problem solving in chess players. 

    I am helping Eduardo Bermúdez (Universidad del Atlántico, Colombia) in his PhD research

        project about problem solving and memory in a modified version of chess.

    I recently began a research collaboration with Merim Bilalic (University of Tübingen, Germany)

        on conscious and unconscious processes in chess experts.

    Ricardo Minervino (University of Comahue, Argentina) and I am planning a new 
        research project that aims at understanding analogical reasoning. For that purpose we are going
        to study the role of expertise in analogical reasoning.

2. Developmental Psychology

Research

Earlier in my career I carried out experiments with rats under the supervision of María del Rosario Lores Arnaiz (University of Buenos Aires). We were interested in the role of the raising environment in stress and working memory. We found that rats that were raised in an enriched environment were not impaired by stress in a working memory task.

 Recently, Fernand Gobet (Brunel University, UK) and I studied developmental aspects of the acquisition of expertise in chess. We were interested in the role of handedness, practice and sensitive period in the attainment of high level skills.

We also studied the role of intelligence and other factors in explaining the raising of chess skill in young players over the last decades.

 In March 2009, I was appointed academic editor of the journal Psicología del Desarrollo y Ciclo Vital [Developmental and Lifespan Psychology], the first issue of which will be published by the Open Interamerican University in October 2009. I am helping with the starting up of the journal and I completed the reviewing process of the first issue.

3. Individual Differences

Research

Fernand Gobet (Brunel University) and I have been investigating the role of intelligence in chess.

Based on this work I am currently working on theoretical aspects of the concept “intelligence”.

My main research project as Research Fellow of the Argentine National Research Council (CONICET) is the investigation of individual differences in decision making. I am studying whether performance in cognitive tests (e.g., “Cognitive Reflection Test” and “Tower of London”) are good predictors of skilled decision making. As part of this project, I am building a research group at the Faculty of Psychology of the Open Interamerican University.

 
4. Judgment and decision making

Research

Besides my interest in individual differences in decision making, I am exploring three more aspects of decision making:

    First, the use of the recognition heuristic and cues in ecological decision-making tasks.

    Second, the role of previous knowledge, type of design and other factors in performance and

        calibration in decision making tasks.

    Third, I have recently commenced a collaboration with the economist Pablo Fajfar (University

        of Buenos Aires,Argentina). We are investigating decision making processes involved in

        strategies in typical tasks used in game theory.


5. General Psychology

Research
I am carrying out a theoretical refinement of the concepts "intelligence" and "memory". I am proposing that rather than being fixed capacities they are skills that vary with training and interaction with the environment.

I have been doing theoretical work on the refinement of concepts, unification of diverse
sub-fields in psychology and in an integrated theory of human decision making.

Herbert Simon's proposed the concept of bounded rationality in decision making and began a research program studying expert’s cognitive processes. Fernand Gobet (Brunel University) and I produced a paper that aims at unifying the research fields of expertise and decision making.

6. Applied Psychology (Educational, Sport, Organisational and Positive Psychology)

Research
Luz Locatelli (Open Interamerican University) obtained a PhD in Sport Sciences in University of Granada, Spain. We are working together in two projects. The first one builds upon her PhD work with football players in which she developed a technique to measure different variables across the whole season. The second project is on decision making in basketball players.

Fernand Gobet (Brunel University) and I evaluated studies that claimed that practicing chess improves academic skills in children. We did not find support for that claim.

We also studied whether deliberate practice (an overaching concept applied to sports, arts and sciences) is a necessary and sufficient condition to achieve expert performance. We found that it is necessary but not sufficient.

Besides my academic work, I realised a number of activities of transfer of scientific psychological knowledge to the society at large. These include:

·        Seminars in Decision making, Conflict resolution, Entrepreneurship, Systemic and organised thinking and other topics, to professionals, small companies and the general public.

·        Training programs for professional psychologists.

·        Psychological training for expert sportmen.

·        Publication of the book Organised Thinking: A psychotechnology to attain happiness, efficiency and intelligent collaboration. (in Spanish)
